Andy Murray out of Australian Open

by Erica on January 14th, 2008

And this is why I don’t like predicting things…because more often than not, I’m wrong!

Andy Murray, at No. 9 in the world, became the highest-ranked player to exit the Australian Open the first day. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France showed Murray how to play tennis in 7-5, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 victory. And here I had said I would back Murray through to the quarterfinals. Crikey!

But that’s why we love tennis, right?

Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny all made it through the first round in three sets. Richard Gasquet won in four and Tommy Robredo battled from two sets down to win his five-setter against Mischa Zverev.

Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova skittered through their opening matches with ease, but it wasn’t so for No. 3 Jelena Jankovic. The Serb strung out her first round match for three hours, finally beating Tamira Paszek 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.

Lindsay Davenport also made it through a hairy first round match, beating Sara Errani 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to set up a second round meeting with Sharapova.

I’m so glad the Australian Open has started. It’s like being let loose in a candy store. Or having a day off of work. But I’m still - aghast - about Murray’s loss. Seriously? Seriously. See if I ever back him again!

You weren’t the only one to place a bet on Murray–I read that elsewhere, too, so this upset is definitely a surprise.

*fingers crossed for Roger’s Lucky #13 and Henin sweeping the court with the Williams sisters*

Serena is definitely looking good - I haven’t watched Venus play yet, but Roger also looks good - guess the lack of a prep tourney hasn’t really affected his game - no surprise there!
