Bookie Infiltrates Tennis World

by Erica on September 29th, 2007

Sports. Betting. Gambling. It’s all basically one big happy family. Minus the happy most times but I’ll save my gambling speech for another time and place.

Apparently Gilles Elseneer, a Belgian, was approached at the 2005 Wimbledon with a 70,000 pound offer to throw his first-round match. 70,000 pounds - now that’s a bit ‘o change, isn’t it? Elseneer turned it down and was quoted as saying “I had my honor as a player to protect and Wimbledon meant everything to me.”

Elseneer is by no means the first tennis player to be approached. No doubt many people have been offered deals and maybe some have taken them, I’m not sure.

I certainly hope these deal-makers have enough smarts to steer clear of Roger. Can you imagine a bookie rushing up to Federer and asking him to throw a match?

I can see the response now.

“I could try to throw a match but I’m just not sure it would work. I haven’t had much practice at losing.”
