Breakdown of Women’s Top Players
The year-end rankings are always a point of conversation, and since I’ve been giving so much attention to the men’s side of the game, I thought I should give the women’s tour a little love as well.
Justine Henin finished the year at No. 1 of course, but what I didn’t realize was that she wrapped up the season with a 63-4 record…a 94% winning percentage. Wa-ow. That’s killer.
And since I haven’t been paying as much attention to the WTA, I certainly didn’t know that Svetlana Kuznetsova finished the season at No. 2. Kuznetsova? Who is she anyway? I don’t even know how to pronounce her name properly; how did she end up at No. 2? Because Kuznetsova put together a solid, albiet unspectacular, year with 10 semifinal appearances. As Kamakshi Tandon says, next year Kuznetsova needs to take that semifinal action a bit further and win more than one title.
Jelena Jankovic claimed third at season’s end. I like Jankovic’s style of play. She’s aggressive and she has moments of complete awesomeness. She was also horribly overbooked and was the epitome of choosing quantity over quality.
The rest of the top players finish out in a rather bland fashion. Ana Ivanovic in fourth, Maria Sharapova in fifth and Anna Chakvetadze in sixth with the Williams’ taking seventh and eighth.
There were certainly moments of brilliance this season during the women’s tournaments, but - as the person in the top position embodies - sometimes the quiet, efficient route can be the best.
