British Girl Odds-on Favorite to Win Wimbledon by 2020

by Erica on July 9th, 2008

Talk about calling matches in advance. Laura Robson is at 6-1 odds to win the ladies title at Wimbledon by 2020. Really? By 2020? What crystal ball are you looking at?

I’m not saying Robson isn’t without talent. For those who don’t follow it, Robson won the Wimbledon junior title this past week with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (Yeah…Noppa-who?). In the absence of any real British presence in the women’s draw of Wimbledon, it was a pretty exciting day for the tea-drinkers ‘cross the ocean. Oh yes, Robson is British - just about as much as one can be, I guess - she lives five minutes from the All England Club. But it seems like such an out-on-a-limb type thing to say. This is tennis! We’ve seen all types of players who were supposed to bring a new level to the sport, and one after the other has fallen short. It’s kind of the nature of the beast.

You know, no big deal. Why not tell a few more 14-year-old kids they’re going to be the next big thing in a few years? Oh wait - because it causes problems, that’s why. There are very few people who can handle huge amounts of success (and expectations) at such a young age without failing miserably elsewhere in equally important areas.

Maybe Robson will win Wimbledon. Maybe she’ll be a Venus and win it five times. I don’t know. But I think it’s more than a little ridiculous to be laying odds on a young teen’s future sporting endeavors.
