Davenport wins in Memphis after 17-year hiatus
Seventeen years ago, Lindsay Davenport was a 15-year-old kid with something to prove. She won both the singles and doubles title in the clay court championships. Now Davenport is a 31-year-old mom with something to prove. She’s just got more experience and a better head on her shoulders, and she won both the singles and doubles titles on the indoor hard courts at the Cellular South Cup in her return to Memphis.
Davenport blistered through a short hour match-up with Olga Govortsova to win her 55th singles crown of her career. Shortly after that victory, Davenport took the court with teammate Lisa Raymond and claimed the doubles title as well.
“I had no idea what to expect coming back,” said Davenport. “I was hopeful, not too sure given my age and the age of most of the players, but it’s been great. I’ve been smart about my schedule and what tournaments I’ve been playing.”
Is she going to be around awhile? Let’s hope so.
