Draws out for French Open

by Erica on May 23rd, 2008

The pairings are out for the French Open, and there are going to be some interesting first-round matches.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing is Roger Federer’s match-up with Sam Querrey. Querrey had some big results earlier this season on clay; what can he do against the world number one? Lleyton Hewitt has Nicholas Mahut in the second quarter of the draw, and Stanislas Wawrinka will be taking on Philipp Kohlschreiber. Rafael Nadal drew a qualifier as did several other ranked players.

In the women’s draw, Maria Sharapova drew a fellow Russian in Evgeniya Rodina and Ana Ivanovic will play Sofia Arvidsson. Serena Williams also drew a countrywoman and will play Ashley Harkleroad in the first round, and Jelena Jankovic will face a qualifier.

I’m not even going to try and predict who’s going to make it through or possible match-ups in the future. It’s tennis…it’s a dangerous thing to try and predict.

And for those of you who have been living under a rock, just got back from an African safari or didn’t have any type of contact with the media, Justine Henin retired and won’t be in the running at a Grand Slam she dominated in recent years.

    Sharapova v Zvonereva - Sharapova
Petrova v Chakvetadze - Chakvetadze Sharapova
Sharapova picks up 2nd slam of the year
Williams v Ivanovic - Ivanovic Jankovic
    Mauresmo v Jankovic - Jankovic

Serena has the toughest draw…….. including Ashley. If Ashley is to catch her the first
round is the most vulnerable for Serena I believe. I don’t think Serena can beat Srebotnik,
Schnyder, Ivanovic and Jankovic all in a row and then have Maria waiting after all but coasting
all the way through the draw.

If Chakvetadze is going to prove to me more than a blip on the radar in the long run this is her
chance to prove it no matter who she faces in the 1/4’s.

Thanks for your in-depth analysis Danny! I definitely agree - Serena has a tough road if she wants to pick up another French Open title.
