Federer, Blake and Venus Advance
The second day of the Australian Open had its exciting moments even though it didn’t have the exit of the No. 9 men’s player Andy Murray (who now has time to focus on British team play, ironically enough).
For those who were worried (or hoping) Roger Federer might not be in top form for the Australian Open, well, he is. And if he isn’t quite there yet, his first few rounds will serve as the final tune-up. Federer sent Diego Hartfield on his way with a 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 match that took 74 minutes. Not too shabby for a guy who was suffering a stomach virus a week ago.
James Blake and the Aussie’s homeboy Lleyton Hewitt both advanced with ease into the second round.
On the women’s side, Venus Williams handed Zi Yan a 6-2, 7-5 defeat, and No. 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced on a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nathalie Dechy. The only two major falls in the women’s draw was the exit of No. 10 Marion Bartoli, losing to Sofia Arvidsson (7-6, 4-6, 3-6). No. 16 Dinara Safin fell to Sabine Lisicki (6-7, 6-4, 2-6) as well.
Matches to watch on Day 3: Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport. Davenport is back from Mommy-land and could be a tough test for No. 5 Sharapova.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Sam Warburg - if for no other reason, I want to see this match and watch the guy who ousted Murray (Tsonga).
No. 11 Tommy Robredo and Mardy Fish - after struggling through an “epic” match, will Robredo be ready to go?
Get ready for Round 2!!
