Federer, Nadal Win Big on Grass
Roger Federer is flying in fine form after the battering he took at the French Open. Federer won the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, for the fifth straight time. Each of his last four victories in Halle were followed up by a Wimbledon title…drum roll for the build-up anyone?
Even more impressive in Federer’s title win was the fact that he didn’t drop his serve. It was also his 59th consecutive victory on grass. Yes, folks. Federer still has his grass game. The question is - does he have it against the top players?
And how about Rafael Nadal? I was talking with one of my tennis buddies today. I hadn’t talked to him since the French and all I could say was: “How good is Rafa? Just how good is this guy?” The answer to that is very. And he’s not falling off on grass either. Rafa won the title at Queen’s after surviving a tough test…battling off world number three Novak Djokovic in a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 two-set gripper. It was the first grass court title for the Spaniard.
And so now I’m going to ask again…just how good is Rafa? For me, Rafa’s victory holds more weight than Roger’s simply because of who Rafa beat. I love Roger…but Roger won his title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber, ranked 40th in the world. When you weigh that in the scales, Federer comes out a little bit wanting.
I keep wanting to ask who it’s gonna be winning the Wimbledon final: Roger or Rafa. But who knows? Maybe Djokovic will get himself to another final. Or maybe it’ll be…David Ferrer? Yeah, probably not. Andy Roddick? Yep, probably no. Let’s just say the top three in the world have managed to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. There’s every possibility a star will emerge in London, but I’m just guessing it’s not going to be this year.
