Federer Weighs in on Match-Fixing Debate
In an Associated Press story printed earlier today, Roger Federer was quoted as saying “I’m surprised by all of these stories, shocked really that this might be happening. I’ve been around for the last 10 years and have never been approached or ever heard anything about it until these comments came out.”
I’m not surprised the world No. 1 hasn’t been approached. Any self-respecting crook should have enough smarts to not go up against the big dog. Whether Federer really doesn’t know about the comments is hard to discern. He said he didn’t know so - he didn’t know. But to me, it’s a lot like politics. He said, she said and nobody really knows where the truth lies.
The article continued to quote Federer as saying “Before I make any serious comments about this I’m going to speak with Andy Murray (who had said corruption in the game of tennis was common knowledge). I’m going to speak with the federation and all the bodies so I can get a better idea of just what exactly is going on with this right now.”
I am intrigued by the fact that Federer is going to talk to the higher-ups. And also to the person who made the comment about corruption being common knowledge. I never really thought about it but Federer, he has some power. He’s been at the top for a long time and when he speaks, stuff goes down. I like to pretend that happens when I speak, but…I guess I’ll just have to live vicariously through Roger.
