It was love at first ace.
Contrary to what may be popular belief (I’ve always wanted to say that about myself…I’m not sure there is such a thing as “popular belief” when it comes to me and my life!), I have not been playing tennis since I was knee-high to blade of grass. In fact, I never played tennis until just a couple years ago.
Growing up, sports weren’t a big part of my life. In fact, they were lacking in my life to the point you could say they were nonexistant. But one day, I was flipping through our three channels and a tennis tournament was being aired. I can’t say for certain but I’m pretty sure it was Wimbledon.
Pete Sampras smacked an ace down the middle and I was in love. I spent the rest of the afternoon praying for the channel to continue to come in clear enough for me to watch.
Since that day, I’ve watched many a tennis match. I’ve seen some “epics” and I’ve seen even more routs. Taking what I had observed over the many years, I taught myself to play against a brick wall and before long got to the point where I wasn’t bad. I wasn’t great, but I was no longer a walking embarrassment.
These days I don’t get out to play (having half a foot of snow on the ground is a severe impediment). But I still get my tennis fix through the tube, the Internet and, of course, here.
And so that’s my tennis life in a nutshell. It didn’t take a very big nut shell…
So how did you get started in tennis? - (It’s kind of a lame way to phrase that question, but I thought it sounded better than “What size of nut shell does your tennis career fit in?”)
