It’s a Race!

by Erica on October 4th, 2007

It is 38 days, eight hours and some-odd minutes until the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai. Everybody get excited! I know it’s a bit old but I thought this article about the top eight players being sculpted as Terracotta Warriors was interesting enough to bring up.

You know, I guess it’s pretty cool to have someone sculpt your likeness as a Chinese Terracotta Warrior. You could put it on your resume, tell your grandkids about the “good ole days,” purchase it and put it in your $3 million lawn…the options are endless!

My burning question, however, is how does Laury Dizengremel (the French sculptor commissioned by ATP to complete the project) know who to sculpt?

Obviously Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are in - they’re already qualified with Djokovic holding a 300+ lead over No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko who has 482 points.

Carve away on those top three but what about the bottom three? In seventh is Fernando Gonzalez  with 331 points. Carlos Moya sits in 10th with 315 points and just ahead of him in ninth is Tommy Haas with 316 points. Holding on to the  precarious eighth slot is James Blake with 321 points.

I’m guessing these statue things take a while to create. Heck, they’re life-size and some of these tennis players are not short. Poor Dizengremel, if he has to carve out a good 10 or 11 Terracotta Warriors instead of eight, well, I might go to the nearest Parisian parlor and tip back a glass of wine.

Congratulations on your new blog! I’m looking forwarding to reading it more in the future. Thanks for including On the Baseline in your links!

By the way, I tried subscribing to your RSS feed using the links above and in my Safari browser, but it keeps redirecting to B5’s main feed. Do you have an alternate link that I can try?
