It’s Like Dating
Singles or doubles? Dating is just like tennis - most people prefer single dates to double dates and most people prefer the singles tour to the doubles tour. Why? I don’t know - maybe because there is more action.
Single dates are really black or white. Either you click and things go well or you don’t hit it off and things definitely don’t go well. (And then there are those dates that are just…kind of like oatmeal…but that’s an entirely different discussion.) Double dates are a safety net. If you don’t get along with the person you’re with, well, at least you have someone else to talk to.
Tennis is much the same way. Singles - you’re out there on your own. It’s all on you. Having a bad day? Tough luck, sonny, work through it or lose. Doubles - there are, obviously, two of you out there. You’re still having to fight for the W but you’ve got someone else to share the burden with. And if you’re in a slump, well, it’s mighty nice to know you’re not catching all the flack for not producing the goods on the court.
‘Cause let’s face it…isn’t the fun part of singles tennis watching the player scramble all over the court, crashing and burning, doing amazing feats of awesomeness? There is always a collective gasp when a player stretches all out to return a ball but that’s everyone is there to see.
And, if we’re being honest here, that’s kind of the joy of watching a single date too. Watching the awkwardness, seeing somebody crash and burn - sure, it sucks, but it makes great entertainment!

When I played competitively (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), I preferred singles. The trouble with doubles is that it takes forever to learn your partner’s strengths and weaknesses. Well, it took me forever…
