Little guy, big fall

by Erica on November 14th, 2007

Bill Dwyre has an interesting column about No. 124-ranked Alessio Di Mauro. The suspension of Di Mauro has been talked about, hashed over, debated and Dwyre’s column is no different. He makes some interesting points, however.

Like how big time sports understand how things like this need to be handled in terms of fans. Can you imagine the debacle if Nikolay Davydenko was suspeneded? Not to say that it should or shouldn’t happen, but Davydenko’s position on the tennis forefront affords him, ah, hem, um, some leeway.

So instead of going after the guy who has more evidence stacked against him, the suits go after the guy no one will miss and yet still get the point across.

One of the best lines from Dwyre’s column?

“One wonders if the Di Mauro Fan Club, always there for his first-round losses on Court 26 in the Grand Slams, will be able to stay together in the interim.”

Very nice Dwyre. Witty and sarcastic - look to his column for more of the same, but if you’re looking for Di Mauro, I guess you’re going to have to give up hanging out at Court 26.
