Monica Seles Retires

by Erica on February 15th, 2008

Even though Monica Seles hasn’t competed in five years but it was just this week that Seles announced her retirement from tennis.

She plans to play exhibitions and play in charity events to promote the sport of tennis but as far as working her schedule around the WTA tournaments - that’s not going to be a part of her life.

Seles won nine Grand Slams and a total of 53 singles titles. And who can forget the infamous day when a whacked-out fan emerged from the stands and stabbed Seles in the back, effectively interrupting her career for a time.

Some say retirement is an ending…I prefer to think of it as a beginning for so many new and amazing things for that person to throw themselves into.

Wow…was that cheesy or what?

To be honest, I am one of the fans of Monica Seles. Many were expecting Seles to come back in the tennis court with her imperious form, but she could not revive her career. I think, the unexpected incident of Germany made her to cut short her career. However, winning nine grand slams still deserves a legendary place for Seles in the tennis history. I wish no more players will have same fortune of Seles.

Seles did accomplish a lot - the vast majority of tennis players never even get into a Grand Slam. To win nine of them is really an accomplishment.
