Rafa Gives Back to Society

by Erica on February 13th, 2008

I think I’ve touched on this before, but I’ve harped on widely popular professional athletes for being wrapped up in their own worlds. Basically - a lot of them are jerks. Is that a blanket statement? Yes. Am I aware there are plenty of nice professional athletes out there? You betcha.

Rafael Nadal launched a foundation this week that will focus on social work, development and various charity projects.

Impressive, no?  So is what Rafa had to say.

“I am doing very well and I owe society,” stated the 21-year-old world No. 2. “The truth is, we live great here. If I can contribute something my image, I will.”

The foundation will be chaired by Rafa’s mother, Ana Maria Parera. Father Sebastien will be vice-chairman and uncle/coach Toni and agent Carlos Costa will also be involved.

Talk about a family affair. But what a great thing to do as a family!

I’ve been luke-warm on Nadal for a long time. I’ve always admired his athleticism and gritty play on the court but it hasn’t been until just this last six months to a year that I’ve really backed him.

The kid has the goods, ya know?

I love the sincerety and the statement. He actually said: ” I am in debt with the society”. I never heard that before. That’s such a great spirit. He is very likable. both as an athelete and as a person.
