Roger: Is he the greatest ever?

by Erica on June 17th, 2008

I enjoy ESPN. I like to look through its articles, see what’s being written about…and then do it better. But I think the thing I enjoy the most about ESPN is all the comments by readers. Yes, comments are indeed my favorite.

So today, there was an article on ESPN about a variety of things, but it led off with a blurb about the ATP Players Council. Apparently, the “big three” are running for the slot (obviously, that’s Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic). There’s been a lot of unhappiness swirling around the ATP executive chairman Etienne de Villiers.

If I had a lot invested in the ATP, I’d want Roger Federer on the council. Why? Because the guy is a born diplomat. He’s excellent with his words, the word on the street is he’s a trustworthy and classy guy…I’d just want him to be going to bat for me. If I couldn’t do it myself anyway.

And then ESPN’s Bonnie Ford held out a live firecracker for folks to play with by posting two opinions on whether Federer would win a Slam this year and their thoughts on Nadal’s demolition of Federer at the French Open.

I’ll keep my views short and sweet: Yes, Roger will win a Slam this year. The French Open? Dude, shit happens…apparently several years in a row. Sometimes a player gets your number at a particular place and time. Case in point the French Open. Nadal owns that thing; it’s his baby and not even Federer can get in the way of that.

But really - if you go and check out the ESPN article - you can skip the actual article and just read the comments because they all discuss whether or not Roger is GOAT (Greatest Of All Time…took me a while to figure that one out…obviously I’m not a texter or 15 years old). Is Roger “the greatest”? Poo. Who cares? The guy is a master player, and he’s done amazing things. I’m not going to sit here and debate a question that will never have a proven answer but heck, it sure is fun to listen to everyone else try and show how much they know about our wonderful sport!
