Sharapova Routs Henin in Australian Open Quarters

by Erica on January 22nd, 2008

I may not like Maria Sharapova too much, but I’m not a complete jerk and I’ll give credit where credit is due. Sharapova rolled No. 1 Justine Henin in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in a dominant 6-4, 6-0 show.

Beating the world’s No. 1 is no easy task, and Sharapova made it look like a routine match. She hit 30 winners and won 71% of her second service points. The No. 5 seed has never won the Australian Open and will face Jelena Jankovic in the semifinals.

As much as I would love to see Jankovic in the championship, I think Sharapova is the best one left standing with both Henin and Serena out. I can see her hoisting the hardware at the end of this tournament. As much as that saddens me, like I said above - I’m not a heartless, pompous jerk and can give kudos when they’re earned.

Maria won over Henin but her father smeared it with his throat-cutting gesture. The act irked a lot of people, Justine- or No-Justine fan alike.
