Sharapova Struggles in First Round
The new world number one Maria Sharapova wasn’t playing like it in the first round of the French Open. After rain delays, Sharapova finally got on the court Wednesday and barely made it through Evgeniya Rodina with a 6-1, 3-6, 8-6 three-set match.
Sharapova committed 17 double faults and put only 64 percent of her first serves in. I guess that’s how you know you’re a quality player. If you can’t hit a serve in to save your life and you still win, it means your game is built around more than one stroke.
In other news on the women’s side, Ana Ivanovic is demolishing her second round opponent. Ivanovic has a 6-1 first set lead on Lucie Safarova with the early break in the second. Good news for Ivanovic and bad for the rest of the field - she looks sharp, very sharp.
We’ll be back later with more news…hopefully the weather holds up in Paris so the play keeps on coming!
