The Line is Drawn, the Russians Have Revealed
Surprise! It’s like a magic show. What did the Russian tennis team pull out of the black top hat tonight? Oh…nothing much. Just a - “Hey Nikolay Davydenko. You’re ranked No. 4 in the world; let’s leave you out of the singles competition and delegate you to doubles.”
Interesante, no?
I’m sure Andy Roddick and Co. thought so. True to word, Russian Davis Cup team captain Shamil Tarpischev did not pull Marat Safin into the spotlight but Tarpischev’s decision to play Davydenko on the doubles team with Ignor Andreev was something unexpected for the Americans.
Dmitry Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny will be handling the singles duties for the Russian camp with Tursunov facing Roddick Friday followed by Youzhny against James Blake.
Obviously, Tarpischev is strategizing. I assume he is strategizing. Maybe he knows something we don’t. There’s a good chance Tarpischev has talked to his teammates more recently than I have.
Or maybe Tarpischev just has a personal vendetta against Davydenko. Now wouldn’t that just suck and be all of a third-grade action.
Ahh, tennis.
