Trivia: Davis Cup

by Erica on November 26th, 2007

With all the hubub surrounding the Masters Cup and Roger Federer’s exhibition matches with Pete Sampras, the Davis Cup has slipped off my radar in recent days. But believe me, it’s back on it.

The Davis Cup is this Friday in Portland, Ore. The Pacific Northwest? Seriously? That’s right in my backyard - as close as you can get to the backyard anyway as far as tennis is concerned.

Mark Baker of the Register-Guard drums up a pretty good article with some Davis Cup facts. Traditionally, I haven’t been a big follower of the Davis Cup. Why, I don’t really know. Maybe because when the end of November strikes, I tend to think more and more about the cold and the snow and less and less about tennis.

But some of the trivia Baker throws around is really interesting. Like the Davis Cup - it’s 323 pounds and three and a half feet tall. And the silver cup has been through a lot. If I wanted an inanimate object to talk about the things it has seen, I think that one would be high up on my list.

And did you know - the Davis Cup tourney was originally called the International Lawn Tennis Challenge? Maybe you did. I didn’t.

Oh - and speaking of things I didn’t know. I didn’t know that South Africa was the only nation to win the Davis Cup by forfeit when India refused to compete in protest of South Africa’s apartheid policies. That was in 1974 and, interestingly enough, South Africa has still never played in a Davis Cup finals match. If that doesn’t tell you something then I don’t know what will.

There’s all types of little “did you know” tips. They’re kind of fun. In a nerdy way. Knowing these things about the Davis Cup really doesn’t prove anything other than that you know a lot about the Davis Cup but what the heck - it’s tennis - who cares how nerdy it makes you?
