U.S. to face hard-hitting Russians in Fed Cup semis

by Erica on February 5th, 2008

It didn’t have a pretty start but the United States survived Germany in the quarterfinals of the Fed Cup and will be facing the Russians in the semifinals at the end of April. Time to get scared? I’m going to give that an affirmative.

Russia has its front-line battling for them. Maria Sharapova hasn’t lost a step since her impressive run to the Australian Open title and she headlined the Russian effort in Israel. Other players up for consideration are Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anna Chakvetadze, Elena Dementieva, Nadia Petrova and Dinara Safina. Guess where all those players reside - yep, in the WTA top 20.

Lindsay Davenport has already given the U.S. team captain the go-ahead to place a call to the Williams sisters. Not that U.S. captain Zina Garrison needs Davenport’s approval but it’s nice when you have a long-time veteran backing you up.

Even with the Williams - should they choose to participate which is always an iffy bet to place - it’ll be a tough road for the Americans when it comes to Russia.

In the other semifinal match-up is upset winners China (over France) and Spain (over Italy).

And even though the Fed Cup may not be the most interesting of tennis events, there are ways to make it interesting. Although I’m not sure James LaRosa’s intro into his article - using the Super Bowl as a lead into a tennis article and littering the first paragraph with football references - is the way to go.
