Venus Survives Three-Setter in Paris

by Erica on May 26th, 2008

What a match! Venus Williams was solidly in control of the match with one set under her belt and on top in the second but Tzipora Obziler fought her way back into it to push the match into three sets.

I saw Venus fall apart in the second set. And then I saw her explode in the third. There was a moment - I believe Obziler had broken Venus in the first game of the third set and in the middle of Obziler’s first service game, Venus just clicked. It was a defining moment, a moment I could even feel from my couch in the living room, and I knew Venus was going to win the third handily. Venus ended the match with rocketing overhead shot to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. If Venus plays like she did in the third set, she’ll go deep into this tournament.

No. 3 Jelena Jankovic is also through to the second after a harrowing 7-6 first set and closing it out with a 6-2 second set over Monica Niculescu.

Rafael Nadal will be up later today as will Maria Sharapova…bring on the competition!
