Venus Wins Korean Open

by Erica on October 2nd, 2007

Remember the days when Venus Williams was just, for the lack of a better term, the bomb diggity? She was brutal on the court. I wouldn’t want to square off against her 6′1″ frame and giant wingspan, staring her down across the net. Scaarrry. Of course I’m 5′5″ and although I’m speedy, I think I’d need to hit the weight room for about, oh, 10 years, before I could muscle the ball over the net half the way Venus does.

She has six Grand Slam titles in a world where thousands of tennis players have none. She was the world No. 1 for awhile. She’s won four Wimblys. I’d be happy just to go to Wimbledon, let alone win it.  Heck, I may even settle for just being a groupie in the stands.

My whole point really is that Venus just really doesn’t go away. She won her first two slams in 2000…seven years ago. And yet she’s still around and just won Wimbledon again this year. Just recently, she beat Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to take the title at the Korean Open.

That’s talent. There are the type that are excellent tennis players and maintain that excellency. They rock the court day in and day out.  Then there are excellent tennis players who are spotty. Sometimes they wow everybody. Sometimes they aren’t seen past the first round of a tournament.

Obviously, the first type of talent is something everyone wants. But you just got to give props to the player who keeps making a charge up the ranks, winning tournaments and never really going away.

7 opinions for Venus Wins Korean Open

My single biggest dream in tennis is for Venus to spend a whole year working hard and playing the whole circuit. I think, even at her age, that she could win the Grand Slam if she really wanted to.

If Venus can put all her moments of greatness into one year, then you have a very valid point!

Bomb diggity? Fo shizzle. When Venus is on her game, she is a lot of fun to watch.

I agree in general with your comments. The thing I couldn’t quite understand was what she was doing playing the Korea Open, a Tier IV tournament with total prize money of $145K, instead of Luxemborg (Tier IV, $600K and many more points), where the 8 seeds were all top 20. The apparent answer is a suspected big appearance fee and a short trip to this week’s tournament in Tokyo.

Did you see the pix from the Korea trophy ceremony? I think they’re on WTA and Tennis.com. They dressed both Venus and Maria Karilenko in native Korean costumes beforehand. Venus got a charge out of it. The thing I appreciate most about Venus is her graciousness. (I can only wish it would rub off on her sister. Oh, well…)

Very insightful comment…the Williams sisters attest to what the rest of the world’s little people know: just because two people are siblings doesn’t mean they are the same!

I have always believed Venus to the more talented of the Williams siblings. But Serena seems to be the more ambitious — and fierce obviously, one.

Oh, and I think she’s good for at least a couple more grand slams.
